Remember Marlon Brando? Here's how he really broke his nose during 'A Streetcar Named Desire'

The iconic actor was said to have broken his nose after goofing around by boxing with someone backstage.

While performing in Broadway for A Streetcar Named Desire, Marlon Brando had to come up with fun ways to pass the time after having played the character of Kowalski for over a year at the time.

Just for fun, Brando was playing around with one of the stagehands, who was an amateur boxer.

They were boxing and the stagehand was taking it easy on the actor, but he insisted they fight for real.

It wasn’t long until the stagehand accidentally punched his nose and blackened his eyes.

As revealed in The New Yorker, Brando had to perform on stage with a bleeding nose.

Jessica Tandy, his co-star, was shocked upon seeing his appearance, but as a professional star, she was able to get it together and ad-libbed the entire scene.

Tandy was said to have uttered the line, “You bloody fool,” as if Brando’s character had just gotten back from a street fight.

As soon as the performance ended, Brando went straight to the nearest hospital and got his nose treated.

The show’s producer, Irene Selznick, told Brando to have his nose reset at the time, but Brando did not listen to her.

Selznick later admitted that she was glad that Brando did not get his nose fixed. She said his broken nose gave him his fame and fortune.

The show’s producer also added that his nose gave him sex appeal because she said Brando was “too beautiful before.”

Brando’s career went on for over five decades. He became most known for his two roles in the film version of A Streetcar Named Desire and in The Godfather.

He first started out as a budding Broadway star in 1944 as John Van Druten’s I Remember Mama.

He was also voted by New York theater critics as Broadway’s Most Promising Actor for his performance in 1946’s Truckline Cafe.

In 2004, Brando passed away due to pulmonary fibrosis in a hospital in Los Angeles. He was 80 years old.
