Jennifer was always overprotective of her daughter, Eve. After she sees some insulting messages sent to her daughter by one of her classmates, her investigation into the matter reveals that Eve may stronger than she thought.

Jennifer and Bob were a middle-aged married couple with one child, their twelve-year-old daughter, Eve. Jennifer was a housewife, and Bob was the breadwinner of their household.

Eve grew up sickly because of birth complications due to her mother having her at age 45. She was born with a fractured clavicle, so her mother was overprotective of her.

The family had just moved into a new house, and Eve was upset because she had to leave all her friends and the only life she'd known.

"This is not fair! I have to start my whole life again because you two decided to move! Don't I have a say in my own life!" Eve yelled as her parents unpacked the moving boxes in the house.

"Eve, I know this is a big change for you. It's a big change for us all. But you'll adjust. Plus, I think you'll have a great time at your new school and make plenty of new friends. They have many great activities you could try. More than your old school," Jennifer said.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. But it was for your own good. I was just trying to protect you as a mother should. I won't apologize for that."

"Whatever," Eve said, rolling her eyes and storming off.

After about a month into her new school, Jennifer noticed something about Eve that unsettled her greatly. Eve would sometimes help her mother prepare supper after school. As Eve and Jennifer were chopping up vegetables, Jennifer noticed bruises on her daughter's arms.

"Eve, what happened to your arms?" a concerned Jennifer said in awe.

"Oh, that... It's nothing. Just some bruises from today's judo session. It was a long day!" Eve said with a sigh.

"Judo? I didn't know you did judo," Jennifer said, failing to hide her disapproval and concern.

"Yeah, I took it up recently. I followed your advice and signed up for an activity," Eve said.

"When I said that, I was thinking more along the lines of debating or painting. Not judo! Someone with your condition shouldn't be doing judo," Jennifer insisted.

"My condition hasn't been a problem, Mom. In fact, I think I may be really good at it," Eve said with a hopeful smile.

"Yeah, well...I'm sorry, but I can't let you continue," Jennifer said, beginning to chop the vegetables with increased intensity.

"What do you mean you can't let me continue? This was your advice, and now that I finally found something I like, you want to snatch it from me again like you did my old life?! No! I won't allow that!" an irked Eve said, storming off.

"Eve!" Jennifer called after her, but she was only met with the loud bang of Eve's bedroom door shutting behind her. Jennifer let out a deep, exhausted sigh.

The next day, a vexed Eve stormed into the house after school and approached her mom, who was watching TV on the couch. "How could you, Mom?" Eve cried, almost in tears.

"What are you talking about, sweetie?" Jennifer asked, acting confused.

"Don't act like you don't know! My judo teacher told me you called and asked that I be excluded from judo lessons for health reasons," said Eve.

"That doesn't change how I feel. I'm fatigued. I can barely get out of bed."

"I'm sorry, sweetheart. But it was for your own good. I was just trying to protect you like a mother should. I won't apologize for that," Jennifer said sternly.

"Well, thank you, Mom!" Eve said sarcastically, dramatically clapping her hands. "You've perfectly ruined everything once again!" Eve said before heading to her bedroom, leaving her downcast mother to hold her head regretfully.

From that day, the tension between Jennifer and her daughter significantly worsened. Eve became moodier and would only talk to her mother if necessary. She would wear her earphones around the house in order to avoid her mother, which drove Jennifer up the wall.

Otherwise, Eve would primarily address her father. This made things particularly difficult, considering Bob was barely home and Jennifer and Eve were alone in the house most of the time.

On one occasion, Jennifer tried to make amends and decrease the tension by surprising her with her favorite fast food. However, Jennifer was utterly dismayed when Eve didn't even touch the food. A few days later, Eve told her mother she had the flu and couldn't attend school.

"Your temperature doesn't seem bad," Jennifer said, checking her daughter's temperature in bed.

"That doesn't change how I feel. I'm fatigued. I can barely get out of bed," Eve said with a whimper.

"Alright. You don't have to go to school for the rest of the week. I'll go to the pharmacy and get you some meds," Jennifer concluded.

Jennifer immediately left for the pharmacy. While driving to the store, she realized she had left her purse at home. She made a U-turn and returned home.

When she got to the house, she heard some singing from Eve's room. When she went to the room and followed the singing to Eve's bathroom. She was shocked to see Eve singing and dancing in front of the mirror. So much for "I can barely get out of bed," Jennifer thought.

Jennifer decided to not say anything to her daughter. She figured she'd give her the day off, but she would have to return to school the next day.

The next day, Jennifer insisted her daughter go to school, no longer entertaining her lies. After a little resistance, Eve finally agreed to go to school.

As much as she tried, Jennifer couldn't subdue her curiosity. Why would Eve lie about being sick? Was this still about the judo lessons, or was something else at play? Jennifer needed answers, and she needed them fast.

Later that evening, while Eve was showering, Jennifer snuck into her room to look for clues. As she opened her daughter's dresser to search for clues, she suddenly felt a surge of guilt for invading Eve's privacy.

"C'mon, Jennifer. Things are already bad between you too. This will only make things worse," Jenniffer muttered to herself, closing the drawer.

As she was about to leave the room, a notification suddenly popped up on Eve's computer. A message appeared on the screen which read:

"You better start minding your own business, you bat!"

Jennifer did her best to not let her curiosity get the better of her. However, as she was about to leave, another notification came in. The message read:

That was the last straw for Jennifer. She began to investigate, looking through her daughter's Internet browser history. What she came across sunk her heart to her stomach and filled Jennifer with both horror and grave concern.

In Eve's browser history were more messages from what appeared to be a young boy. He was spewing insults, threats, and horrific pictures of dead animals.

The shower suddenly turned off in the bathroom. Eve was done. Jennifer quickly closed the history tabs on the browser in a panic. She rushed towards the door.

"Mom?" a confused Eve said, standing outside at the bathroom door in a towel. "What are you doing?" she asked.

"Oh, nothing, my dear. Uhm... I..." Jennifer stammered as she looked around the room, finally spotting some dirty clothes in Eve's laundry basket. "I was just about to do laundry and wanted to see if you had anything to add to the batch. Obviously, you do," Jennifer said, grabbing the laundry basket and exiting.

"Hmm... Weird," Eve said before shrugging it off and preparing for the day.

Jennifer said nothing to Eve about what she had seen. But she was determined to get to the bottom of it. The next day, she rushed to the school principal's office for answers.

"His name is Rick! You have to deal with him immediately!" Jennifer yelled furiously.

The principal looked concerned as he held his hands together in deep contemplation. After a moment, he finally spoke, "I hear your concerns, ma'am. But this is the son of Mrs. Stevens, one of the very generous patrons of our school. My hands are tied."

"What do you mean your hands are tied?! So having money allows one to get away with making other people's lives miserable now?" Jennifer barked furiously.

"I'm sorry, ma'am. I can't help you. Now, if that is all, I have a lot of work to get to. Please," the principal said, gesturing towards the door.

Jennifer stormed out in a huff and immediately went to Eve's teacher's class. Her teacher, Miss Daniels, was in the class alone, marking papers. Jennifer voiced her concerns.

"I'm sorry, but if you've already spoken with the principal and he said he can't help, I'm afraid there's nothing I can do either," Miss Daniels said.

"You people have some nerve!" Jennifer snapped furiously. "This is bullying and—" before Jennifer could finish her sentence, she suddenly grabbed her head, grimacing in pain.

"Ma'am, are you okay?" Miss Daniel asked, standing up.

"Yeah, I just feel a little dizzy," Jennifer said, standing up and leaning against the wall as if she wanted to walk out. "I think—" Jennifer started before suddenly falling to the ground unconscious.

Jennifer woke up hours later in the hospital with Bob and Eve at her bedside with flowers. The doctor came in and explained that she appeared to have a cancerous tumor. Jennifer was utterly shattered. This was the last thing she was expecting.

"I'm so sorry, Mom. Don't worry. We are here for you," Eve said, hugging her mother in tears.

"Thank you, my love," Jennifer replied.

"I came with you in the ambulance from school. My teacher told me you had passed out during a meeting with her. What went wrong?" Eve asked.

"Yes, ma'am. I'll pay for everything. You just focus on getting better."

"Uhm... Sweetheart, I saw the horrible messages that a boy in your class was sending you on your computer. I went to your school to try and help you," Jennifer confessed. "What's been going on?" she added.

"Miss Daniels has been giving Rick grades he doesn't deserve because of his dad. So, I started calling him out on it in class when I found out. He got mad and started harassing me. I tried to talk to the principal, and they took his side. That's why I didn't want to go to school anymore," Eve explained.

"I just couldn't stand what they were doing," she added.

"Oh, my brave little girl. You're amazing, you know that?" Jennifer said in tears as she gently stroked Eve's hair. "Don't worry. Once I'm better, I'll sort it out," she said, trying to sit up but almost falling as she grimaced in pain.

"No, Mom," Eve said, helping her back into a resting position. "You need to focus on getting better. Don't worry about me. I know how to handle people like Rick. I learned from the best," Eve said with a warm smile.

"Alright, my baby. I trust you," Jennifer said. The two embraced each other in a loving hug again.

Later that day, Jennifer called Eve's judo sensei and told him she could attend classes again. Eve started her lessons again and gradually improved.

Eve's sensei noticed her potential and encouraged her to enter a local tournament. Eve was nervous and hesitated initially, but eventually, she agreed to try it.

Jennifer stayed in the hospital for tests and mild treatment. Bob and Eve would visit her in the evenings. Eve updated her mother on everything about the upcoming tournament. Jennifer was proud of her.

On the other hand, Bob was stressing over the money needed for treatment. In the little time Jennifer had spent in the hospital, they had already almost maxed out their money and were beginning to dip into their savings.

Eve trained tirelessly for the tournament, spending hours after school in the dojo. When the tournament finally came, Eve's performance was impeccable. She won a trophy and was named the local champion in her weight class.

While Jennifer was still in the hospital when the tournament occurred, Bob recorded Eve's fights for her so she could watch them later. Jennifer was in disbelief at how good her daughter was. She also noticed the confidence it brought out in her outside of the dojo. She was beyond proud of her little girl.

While she still needed some major treatment, Jennifer's condition got better, and she was allowed to go back home until she could find her way forward with her treatment. Things were still financially tough for Jennifer and Bob.

However, Jennifer was still set on getting justice for her child. She went to the police with screenshots of Eve and Rick's conversations and explained the whole debacle at school. The police detained Rick for a while, and he was eventually expelled but not arrested.

The principal and Miss Daniels were also fired after the school investigated their negligence independently.

As Jennifer and her family were having lunch at home one day, an unexpected visitor knocked at the door. Eve opened the door to find a middle-aged man in a fancy suit standing at the threshold.

"Hi, dear. You must be Eve. Could I please speak to your parents," the man said. Eve let him in, and he approached Jennifer and Bob at the dinner table.

"Please forgive my intrusion. I'm Mr. Stevens, Rick's father. I'm here to make amends for my son's horrible behavior and ill-treatment of your daughter," Mr. Stevens said.

"Make amends? How?" Jennifer asked, still suspicious of the stranger.

"I heard you were diagnosed with cancer. I would like to pay for your treatment," Mr. Stevens said.

Jennifer covered her mouth in utter shock as both Jennifer and her husband began to well up. "Are you serious?" she asked in disbelief.

"Yes, ma'am. I'll pay for everything. It's the least I can do after what you've had to go through because of my kid. You just focus on getting better," Mr. Stevens concluded.

"Thank you so much, Mr. Stevens!" Bob said, getting up to shake his hand. The family invited Mr. Stevens to join them for dinner, and they all ate together cheerfully and toasted to Jennifer's recovery.

Jennifer began her treatment and had a speedy recovery. She learned not to be so overprotective of her daughter and started trusting Eve to make her own decisions. This helped her recovery as Bob and Eve looked after her.

She also learned how to delegate her responsibilities to her daughter and husband. She gave them more freedom and soon realized that it, in turn, gave her more freedom.

What can we learn from this story?

  • Sometimes overprotection makes your children weaker. Remember, you'll never always be by their side. Jennifer had to realize that her overprotectiveness only limited her daughter.
  • Uphold justice. Jennifer's determination to get justice for her daughter paid off in the end, as she was helped with her treatment in the end.
