Nicole arrived at the restaurant for a date with her boyfriend, Zack, and sat down at the table. The dim lighting casts a warm glow, making the atmosphere feel intimate and cozy.

Zack, always the gentleman, gallantly helped her to her seat. As he returned to his own, he gazed lovingly into her eyes, a soft smile playing on his lips.

"How was your day?" Zack asked, his voice filled with genuine curiosity.

Nicole chuckled, trying to deflect the question with a light-hearted comment. "Oh, you know, the usual. Running errands, catching up on some reading," she said, waving her hand dismissively.

Zack's curiosity wasn't so easily deterred. "We've been together for almost a year now, Nicole, and I still feel like I know so little about you," he said, his tone turning more serious.

"Especially about what you did for work before we moved in together. You seemed pretty well-off, but you were unemployed when we met. You never talk about it."

Nicole's smile faltered for a moment before she quickly recovered. She took a deep breath, then looked Zack in the eye.

"Zack, I want to leave my past behind. Some things are better left unknown. What matters to me is who I am now and that I'm with you," she said, her voice steady but with an undertone of vulnerability.

Zack nodded, understanding her hesitation but still curious. He smiled and subtly signaled the waiter. Within moments, the waiter approached with two glasses of champagne, the bubbles rising swiftly to the surface. Zack took one glass and handed the other to Nicole.

"I'd like to make a toast," Zack said, raising his glass. "To us, to our love, and to our future together."

Nicole smiled and clinked her glass against his. She took a sip and suddenly noticed something in the glass. Her eyes widened in surprise as she carefully pulled out a ring. Zack got down on one knee beside her, holding her hand gently.

"I know we haven't been together long, and we haven't met each other's parents, but I am sure I want to spend my life with you," Zack said, his voice filled with emotion. "Nicole, will you marry me?"

Nicole was shocked. She hadn't expected a proposal so soon. Her heart raced as she looked into Zack's earnest eyes. Tears welled up as she nodded enthusiastically. "Yes, Zack. Yes, I'll marry you," she said, extending her hand to him.

Zack slipped the ring onto her finger, and it fit perfectly. The entire restaurant seemed to disappear as they kissed, sealing their commitment to each other.

The couple's moment was briefly interrupted by the sound of applause. Other diners witnessed the proposal and clapped and cheered.

Nicole blushed and laughed, feeling a mix of embarrassment and joy. Zack stood up, pulling her into a warm embrace.

As they settled back into their seats, Nicole couldn't help but reflect on how far they had come. She thought about the secrets she still kept from Zack and how much she wanted to tell him everything but feared his reaction.

"Are you happy?" Zack asked, his eyes searching hers.

"More than you'll ever know," Nicole replied, squeezing his hand. She hoped that one day she could share her entire past with him, but for now, she was content with their love and the future they were building together.

The next day, Zack and Nicole drove to Zack's parents' house in the car. The sky was a clear blue, and the road stretched out before them, surrounded by fields and trees. Zack's hands gripped the steering wheel a bit tighter than usual.

"I feel really awkward about this," Zack admitted, breaking the silence. "I have to explain to my parents why they haven't met my fiancée yet."

Nicole glanced at him, her stomach knotting with guilt. "I'm so sorry, Zack. It's my fault. I was supposed to visit them during the holidays, but I got sick."

She knew she was lying. The truth was, she had been too afraid to meet his parents. Serious relationships were hard for her, and meeting his parents was a huge step.

She hadn't spoken to her own parents in years and didn't even know if they were alive. The thought of meeting Zack's family was terrifying.

Zack sighed. "I understand, but it’s still going to be awkward."

Nicole reached out and squeezed his hand. "We'll get through it together," she said, trying to sound confident.

Zack’s car pulled up to his parents' house, a charming two-story home with a neatly trimmed lawn and flowers lining the walkway. Peter and Marjorie, Zack's parents, stood by the door, waving toward the car with big smiles.

Zack got out first, and Peter immediately walked over to help with the luggage. "Hey, Dad," Zack greeted him, handing over a suitcase.

Nicole followed Zack, her heart pounding. "Hi, I'm Nicole," she said, trying to steady her voice.

Marjorie stepped forward with a warm smile and hugged Nicole. "It's so nice to finally meet you, Nicole. Zack has told us so much about you. You’re even more beautiful in person!"

Nicole blushed. "Thank you, Mrs. Carter. It’s great to meet you, too."

Suddenly, Peter, who had been picking up the bags, looked up and froze. His face went pale as he stammered, "Nicole?"

Nicole turned, equally shocked. She recognized Peter immediately as a former client from her past job, a part of her life she desperately wanted to forget.

Zack, noticing the tension, frowned. "How do you two know each other?"

Nicole quickly took control of the situation, her mind racing. "Oh, we met once at my previous job. I didn’t recognize you at first, Peter. It’s nice to see you again."

"Your previous job? My dad owns a car repair shop. What did you do that you worked together?" Zack asked, puzzled.

Nicole laughed nervously, glancing at Peter. "Let’s not dig up the past, darling. I’m sure neither your father nor I want to remember it."

Peter caught on and smiled, backing her up. "Yes, son, trust me, it's nothing interesting."

They all went inside, the tension easing slightly as they began preparing for dinner. Marjorie and Nicole set the table while Zack and Peter brought in the rest of the luggage.

Dinner was tense. Peter avoided eye contact with Nicole, who nervously joked and tried to keep the conversation going to distract from the awkwardness between her and Peter.

She talked about the beautiful house, complimented Marjorie's cooking, and even shared a funny story about their trip to the restaurant. But despite her efforts, the atmosphere remained heavy.

Zack, slightly tipsy from the wine, eventually brought up the question that had been bothering him. "So, how do you two know each other, again?" Zack asked, his voice tinged with irritation. He wanted a straight answer and was tired of the evasions.

"Darling, there's nothing interesting to say..." Nicole tried to stop him, her voice shaking slightly. She could feel the tension rising.

"But why? My dad knows my fiancée, and neither of you wants to explain. It must be something very interesting!" Zack insisted, his frustration evident.

"For the last time, I don't want to talk about my past!" Nicole snapped, her patience finally breaking.

She was tired of the questions and the fear of her past being exposed. But Zack, fueled by alcohol, kept pressing, determined to get to the bottom of it.

They argued at the table, voices rising, with Peter remaining silent, looking increasingly uncomfortable. Marjorie, however, seemed to realize what had happened. She stood up, raising her hands to signal for calm.

"Everyone, please, let's calm down," Marjorie said firmly. "Zack, if you want to build a family and spend your life with someone, you need to accept her as she is. Sometimes it is very hard. I know this from experience."

Zack looked at his mother, confused. Marjorie took a deep breath and continued, "When I found out Peter had been unfaithful for much of our life together, I wanted to leave him. But I decided to think about our family and gave him a chance to change. And he did change. It only strengthened our family, and we left the past behind."

Zack's anger slowly subsided as he listened to his mother. He realized that if his parents could overcome such a huge challenge, maybe he could, too. He looked at Nicole, who was on the verge of tears, and felt a pang of guilt.

"I'm sorry, Mom," Zack said quietly, his anger melting away. He turned to Nicole, his eyes softening. "I'm sorry, Nicole. I didn't mean to push you like that."

Nicole nodded, wiping away a tear. "It's okay, Zack. I understand."

The dinner ended on a calmer note, with Zack and Nicole going to their room. As they walked up the stairs, Zack held Nicole's hand tightly, silently promising her that they would work through this together.

Before they went to bed, Zack sat on the edge, his head in his hands. He looked up at Nicole, who was nervously pacing the room.

"Nicole," he said softly, "I'm really sorry for pushing you tonight. I promise I won't ask about your past anymore. I will accept you as you are because I know I love you."

Nicole stopped pacing and looked at him, tears welling up in her eyes. She sat down next to him, taking a deep breath. "Zack, it isn't you who needs to apologize. It's me." Her voice trembled as she spoke, and Zack could see the pain in her eyes.

He reached out and took her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "What do you mean, Nicole? You don't have to apologize for anything."

Nicole's tears spilled over, and she wiped them away with the back of her hand. "I need to tell you something, Zack. I've been hiding something because I was afraid you'd leave me if you knew."

Zack's heart pounded in his chest. "You can tell me anything, Nicole. I'm here for you."

She took another deep breath, steadying herself. "Before we met, I used to be a call girl. That’s why I had financial stability but no job when we met. I hated that life and wanted to leave it behind, but it seems like the past never truly stays buried. Peter... Peter was one of my clients."

Zack's eyes widened in shock, but he didn't let go of her hand. "Nicole, I..."

Nicole cut him off, her voice breaking. "I’m so sorry, Zack. I understand if you never want to see me again. But I love you, and I want to be with you forever. I couldn’t keep this from you any longer."

Zack felt a whirlwind of emotions—shock, confusion, and a deep sense of compassion for Nicole. He pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as she sobbed.

"Nicole, I won't lie and say I'm not shocked. But your past doesn't change how I feel about you. We all have things we regret things we're not proud of. What matters is who you are now, and I love who you are now."

Nicole clung to him, her sobs gradually subsiding. "Thank you, Zack. I was so scared you'd leave me."

He kissed the top of her head. "I'm not going anywhere. We’ll face this together."

Nicole pulled back slightly to look at him, her eyes red from crying but filled with hope. "You really mean that?"

Zack nodded, brushing a tear from her cheek. "I do. We'll deal with this one step at a time. The important thing is that we're honest with each other and that we move forward together."

Nicole managed a small smile. "I don’t deserve you, Zack."

He shook his head. "Yes, you do. Everyone deserves a second chance, a fresh start. I love you, Nicole, and nothing will change that."
