Mom Accidentally Invites All 487 Contacts to Daughter's 1st Birthday Party – People Are Dying to Know How Many Showed Up
In a comical yet mortifying mix-up, Emily King, a 30-year-old wife, mother, and teacher, accidentally invited all 487 of her phone contacts to her daughter Ivy’s first birthday party. The incident has captivated millions, thanks to a series of viral TikTok videos where King recounts the mishap in hilarious detail.
Emily King, planning a simple celebration at a local park, used the online invitation service Evite to send out digital invites. The confusion started when she misinterpreted Evite's "import contacts" feature.
Thinking she would get to select which contacts to invite, she inadvertently sent invitations to everyone on her phone, including her boss, ex-boyfriends, and people she'd only met once.
"I just made an Evite for my daughter's first birthday party and on Evite it says, 'Import contacts' and I thought it meant import to select through [the names]," King explained in her initial TikTok video, which has amassed over 16 million views, as of June 25, 2024.

"No — it imported all 487 of my contacts and invited them to this birthday party," she continued, clearly distressed yet amused by the blunder.
The most embarrassing part, as King humorously detailed, was the manner in which these contacts were stored in her phone. "I want you to just take a second and think about everyone stored in your phone and how they're stored in your phone," she said.

Her boss and coworkers were also on the list, making for an awkward next day at work. "Anyways, I have to quit or get a new identity," said King. "I don't even know."
Upon realizing her mistake, King quickly canceled the event on Evite. However, the damage was done. Invitations had already been sent out, leaving her to face the fallout.
In a follow-up TikTok video, King clarified how the error occurred, explaining she was in the process of importing guests from previous parties when she clicked the wrong button.
"So I guess there is a place where you can like go through and select your contacts. But there's another place that says import guests from previous parties so that's where I was," she said.
She detailed her confusion, thinking she was importing contacts to the guest list selectively, but ended up sending invites to all 487 people in her contacts list. Despite the embarrassment, King's mishap resonated with many, turning her into a TikTok sensation.

People were not only entertained but sympathetic, with many finding humor in the situation. King shared that her boss, ex-boyfriends, and other acquaintances took it in stride, finding the situation hilarious. Even Evite reached out to her, offering a gift card for Doordash as a small consolation.
In another TikTok update, King showed her followers how to use Evite correctly, leveraging her newfound fame to promote the platform's user-friendly features.

"So not only is Evite now helping me throw my daughter's first birthday but they've also now developed an app with teachers and moms in mind," she said. "Y'all, if you're like me, you love hosting, you love a good potluck, and you always end up using Google Sheets to organize your events. It is not that effective. Also, Google Sheets aren't cute. This is way easier than that."
The incident also inspired Evite to make changes to their app, introducing what they dubbed the "Emily Hotfix" to prevent such mishaps in the future.
Evite's statement highlighted their commitment to improving user experience based on feedback, humorously acknowledging King's unintended contribution to their platform's evolution.
As for Ivy's birthday party, it was back on with a "Lord of the Rings"-themed bash, planned with meticulous care this time.

After the mishap, King expanded her original guest list from 50 to 70, inviting more people to join in the celebration. She was determined to turn the initial blunder into a memorable story for her daughter.
"It's going to be definitely a first birthday for the books. I'm really excited when [Ivy's] older to be able to tell her the story," King said, her excitement evident as she put up decorations in another TikTok video.

"When you're planning a first birthday party for your daughter that millions of people are now invested in," she captioned the clip, reflecting on the unexpected fame the incident brought her.
King's story serves as a humorous reminder to double-check digital actions, especially when using new technology. While the initial panic was real, the ability to laugh it off and share the experience brought joy and a few life lessons to many.
King's good humor and Evite's quick response turned a potential disaster into a heartwarming and entertaining saga that millions could enjoy.
In an exclusive interview, King vividly recalled the sinking feeling when she realized the extent of her mistake. "I kind of like, immediately knew. I was like, 'Wait, something's wrong. … This is not happening.' So like, all the blood rushes from my body," she said.
King explained that she had intended to import guests from a recent St. Patrick's Day party and did not realize she had imported her entire contact list until it was too late.
"I started to look at the list and it's everyone that I had ever put in my phone," she said. "And not only that, it's everyone I put in my phone as they are stored in my phone … and everyone that I ever emailed through my job."
King's detailed account highlighted the humorous side of the incident, such as the contacts being labeled with various nicknames and descriptions. "It's like, 'cute boy from the bar' and … like 'old man neighbor' and it's like, 'Derek eye-roll emoji' and I hit this girl's car in a grocery store parking lot once [and] it said 'Jess hit car in parking lot,'" she explained.
"At first I was mortified, but I like to think I have a pretty good sense of humor," King said. "So I was like, I was embarrassed but then also cracking up, like I couldn't stop laughing that this had happened."
King also shared how she initially hoped to cherry-pick friends from her gender reveal party but ended up inviting everyone on her phone. "When I typed 'Dad' it showed he was already invited," she recalled. "I thought, 'Weird.'
That's when King saw the 487-person guest list. She panicked and was able to delete the invite within several minutes of the error — but it was sent. "All the blood drained from my body," she said.
Scanning the public guest list, many with emojis she had selected for each name, King saw old contacts stretching back 15 years. The list included a grad school tutor who was "kinda annoying" and a cute guy named "Justin Delta Sky Lounge" who she flirted with en route to New Zealand when she was 21.
King's high school science lab partner received an invite, as did all her ex-boyfriends, including a "Cute guy from [the] bar."
King was hoping to never hear from "Jess Hit Her Car In Parking Lot," whose car she dinged outside of Trader Joe's, but said, "Now I'm worried she's going to follow up."
The next day at school, King's students — 70 of whom were invited — were gossiping about the party. "There were a lot of, 'I wasn't invited but you were' conversations," said King.
She painstakingly uninvited her colleagues — including "New science teacher I think?" and "David parking lot attendant," as well as her vice-principal.
Fortunately, many guests didn't RSVP — they either understood the error or were just embarrassed. However, King decided to invite dozens more to the party because, as she said, why not?
King's colossal yet hilarious blunder garnered an overwhelming response from netizens worldwide. One commenter wrote, "But did they all show up now I need to know."
Meanwhile, another added, "Hahaha the fact she's crying while also laughing is hilarious. I'm so sorry mama, but thank you for the laughs. I would be mortified." Another TikTok user expressed their curiosity, "I love this so much! I wonder how many people came!"
One user demanded a sequel, "We need a follow-up to this story! Who showed up to the party? Did Derek???" The sentiments of sympathy and humor continued with, "Omg I would be so embarrassed and yes it would be the best freaking party I've ever thrown!! Lol."
Another user resonated with King's predicament, "I definitely would be screwed…. 'work don't answer,' 'Cate the annoying nurse,' 'recruiter don't answer,' 'kacie who literally doesn't know how to do her job'… I said what I said [sic]."
Indeed, what King did is one incredible way of making your daughter's first birthday special and unforgettable! This is definitely one for the history books (or social media's digital memorabilia).
