Girl Takes Ring Off Granny’s Hand at Her Funeral, Wakes up at Night and Sees Silhouette in Her Room – Story of the Day
Bella thought taking her grandmother's ring was harmless until a sinister silhouette appeared in her bedroom. She lay still, trying not to alert him, when she heard the unknown person mumble. That's when she let out a horrifying scream that made her father rush inside.
Bella's eyes fluttered open in the darkness of her room. It was around 2 a.m. when strange noises from downstairs had stirred her from sleep.

Curious, she tiptoed down the hallway and stood at the top of the stairs. From there, she tried to listen to the muffled voices coming from the living room.
"It can't be true," her mother's voice quavered. "Julia was fine just yesterday."
"I know, Jane," her father's deep voice replied. "But the doctor said it was quick. She didn't suffer."
Bella's heart raced. Something was terribly wrong, but she couldn't quite grasp what.

As she leaned closer, a floorboard creaked beneath her feet.
"Bella?" her father called out. "Is that you?"
Bella slowly descended the stairs and found her parents surrounded by relatives in the living room. Her mother's eyes were red and puffy from crying.
"What's happening?" Bella asked.
Just then, her mother burst into tears again. That's when her father gently shook his head and gestured for her to return upstairs.
Confused and worried, Bella retreated to her room.

What's going on? She thought. Why's everyone so serious? Why was Mom crying?
It wasn't until the next morning that she learned the heartbreaking truth: her beloved grandmother, Julia, had passed away in the night.
The funeral home was a sea of black-clad figures. Bella stood awkwardly in her itchy black dress, watching her relatives with growing unease. What she noticed was that her relatives seemed more interested in discussing the estate instead of sharing fond memories of her Grandma Julia.

"I heard the old bird was loaded," Bella overheard one cousin whisper. "Wonder who'll get the house?"
Disgusted, Bella slipped away from the crowd and approached her grandmother's casket.
Upon taking a look inside, her gaze landed on Julia's hands. They were folded neatly on her chest, and on one of her fingers was the ring. The ring Bella had always admired.
"One day, my dear," Julia had said, "this ring will be yours."
Without thinking, Bella reached out and gently slipped the ring from her grandmother's finger.

It felt cool against her palm as she tucked it into her pocket.
I'm not stealing this ring, she told herself. It's Grandma's last gift to me. She always wanted this.
Just then, she felt someone standing behind her.
"What do you think you're doing?" a gruff voice startled her.
Bella whirled around to find her Uncle Sam looming over her.
"N-nothing," Bella stammered. "Just saying goodbye."
Uncle Sam's gaze flicked to the casket, then back to Bella.
"You better not have taken anything, girl," he growled.

Bella nodded and fled toward her mother, seeking refuge by her side.
I hope he didn't see it, she thought, tightening her grip on the ring inside her pocket.
Soon, the family gathered in the stuffy office of Grandma Julia's lawyer, Mr. Finch. Tension crackled in the air as he adjusted his glasses and began to read the will.
"To my daughter Jane, I leave the family home," Mr. Finch announced.
Jane gasped softly, while the others looked at her with wide eyes.

As Mr. Finch continued, distributing smaller portions of the estate to Julia's other children, the room grew increasingly restless. Uncle Sam's face darkened with each bequest that wasn't his name.
"And for my grandchildren," Mr. Finch continued, "I have established a trust fund for their education and future endeavors."
Just as the lawyer was about to conclude, Uncle Sam burst out, "What about Ma's jewelry? Especially her ring?"
Mr. Finch looked at the will.

"I'm afraid there's no specific mention of jewelry in the will."
"That's impossible!" Uncle Sam protested. "That ring... it's valuable. Probably worth millions!"
The room erupted into chaos as Julia's relatives shouted over each other. Meanwhile, Bella sank into her seat.
Oh, no, she thought.
"I saw you!" Uncle Sam suddenly pointed at Bella. "At the funeral, you were fiddling with something by the casket. You took it, didn't you?"
All eyes turned to Bella.
"N-no," she stammered while her cheeks felt hot. "I didn't take anything."

"Liar!" Uncle Sam lunged forward, but Bella's father, George, stepped between them.
"That's enough, Sam," George said firmly. "You're scaring her."
"We should search her room," another aunt suggested. "If she has nothing to hide, she won't mind."
Bella looked pleadingly at her parents.
"This is ridiculous!" Jane intervened, wrapping her arm around Bella protectively. "We're not searching anyone's room."
As Bella left the lawyer's office with her parents, she could feel everyone staring at her. It made her wonder if she had done the right thing by taking the ring.

Later that night…
Bella jolted awake, her heart racing.
An unusual noise had disturbed her sleep. She opened her eyes but lay perfectly still, trying to hear what it was.
Then, she heard it. A soft, scraping sound that was coming from inside her room. Beads of sweat trickled down the sides of her forehead as she realized she wasn't alone.
Someone was inside her room.
Bella slightly turned her head and saw a dark silhouette moving about her room.

The figure was rifling through her dresser drawers while muttering under their breath.
At that point, Bella wanted to scream out loud, but she forced herself to remain still. She was afraid of the intruder and didn't know how they'd react.
Then, the person moved to her desk.
"Where is it?" the intruder said in a low voice.
That's when it hit Bella. The voice was too familiar, too oddly familiar.
Uncle Jerry? She thought.

Her uncle was searching for the ring in her room. As he approached her bed, Bella couldn't contain her fear any longer. She let out a piercing scream.
"Bella!" George's voice boomed from the hallway.
A few moments later, the bedroom door burst open.
"Bella? What happened? Are you—" George asked but stopped midway when he saw Jerry standing in Bella's room.
"What on earth are you doing here, Jerry?" George demanded.

"Th-the ring…" he stammered. "Sam said… he said it was worth millions! So I just came here to—"
"Are you serious?" George's face flushed red with anger.
Just then, Jane appeared in the doorway.
"I'm calling the cops!" she said.
"No, please," Jerry protested. "Please don't."
"You broke into our house and entered my daughter's room!" Jane yelled. "I have to inform the police. This is unacceptable!"

"It was Sam…" Jerry confessed. "He convinced me to break in and search Bella's room. We had even hired some guys to search the house during the funeral, but they couldn't find it."
"What the heck, Jerry!" Jane yelled.
"I'm sorry…" Jerry said. "I just came here to check, but…"
That's when Jane dialed 911, and the police arrived a few minutes later.

The living room was tense as the police finished their initial inquiry. Jerry sat on the couch, head in his hands, while Sam paced angrily, having been brought in for questioning.
"You idiot," Sam spat. "If you had just let me handle it—"
"Enough!" George's voice thundered. "You two have some explaining to do. Now."
Jerry looked up.
"It was all Sam's idea," he began. "He found one of Mom's old letters talking about a valuable diamond. He was convinced it was hidden in plain sight… in her ring."

"Don't act like you weren't on board, Jerry," Sam rolled his eyes. "You were just as greedy."
"So, you hired thieves?" Jane asked, incredulous. "To rob your own mother's house during her funeral? C'mon, tell the cops how you did it!"
"We thought... if we could find it first... before the will was read..." Jerry said.
The cops noted everything Sam and Jerry said before taking them into custody. They kept begging for Jane and George to forgive them, but it was too late.

Once the police car pulled away, Bella came out of her room holding the ring. She showed it to her parents and confessed everything.
"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I did take the ring. Grandma always said it would be mine one day."
Jane and George looked at the ring carefully. It looked like a precious ring, and they were sure their daughter wasn't lying.
"Oh, sweetheart," Jane said softly. "You have nothing to be sorry for."
"Your Mom's right," George nodded. "Don't worry."

The next morning, George suggested they take the ring to the jeweler to get it appraised. He drove Jane and Bella to their family jeweler.
To everyone's amazement, the jeweler confirmed that the stone was indeed a diamond.
"Your grandmother had quite the eye," the jeweler said, looking at Bella. "This is worth a small fortune."
Then, he handed the ring back to Bella.

"Do you want to sell it?" Jane asked. "We could put the money towards your future."
Bella shook her head firmly.
"No. Grandma wanted me to have it. Not because it's valuable, but because it was special to her."
"You're right, sweetheart," George patted her back. "Some things are worth more than money."
As they walked out of the jewelry store, Bella slipped the ring onto her finger. It was a perfect fit, as if it had always been meant for her.
Thank you, Grandma, Bella thought. I'll always keep it safe.
