When Becca jolts awake from a disturbing dream at 3 a.m., she rushes to her baby's crib, only to find it empty. As panic sets in, Becca's mind reels with terrifying possibilities. Where could her precious daughter be in the dead of night?

It was a Thursday night when the moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting eerie shadows across Becca's room. She tossed and turned while frightening images haunted her in her dreams.

In her nightmare, a familiar figure loomed over Mira's crib. It was Emit, her ex-boyfriend, and Mira's father.

She remembered him as a kind and loving man. But now, he stood there with a sinister grin she had never seen before.

"It's over for you," he said, looking at Becca. "It's over!"

He was almost ready to take their daughter away when Becca suddenly opened her eyes.

"No!" she screamed, bolting upright in bed.

She could feel her heart race as she gasped for air.

The nightmare was still fresh in her mind, and it felt like she had really seen Emit standing near Mira's crib.

Beads of sweat trickled down her temples as she tried to calm herself down.

It was just a dream, she thought. Emit's gone. He can't hurt us.

But the memory of Emit's departure still stung.

Becca met Emit through a mutual friend and they instantly hit it off. After dating for a few months, Becca realized Emit was the man she'd been looking for.

He was kind, caring, brave, honest, and had every quality that made him the perfect guy.

Soon, they moved in together, and Becca began a new chapter of her life with him. However, her thoughts about him soon began to change.

"Mom says we should get married soon," she told him one day. "What should I tell her? How do I explain you're not ready for it?"

"I told you I need some time," he replied, looking straight into her eyes. "I'm not ready yet, okay?"

Marriage wasn't the only thing that haunted Emit. He was running away from the responsibilities that would accompany him becoming a husband and a father. He didn't want a wife or kids. He just wanted a girlfriend, and Becca wasn't ready for that.

One day, things turned serious when Becca realized she was pregnant.

She clearly remembered the cold and distant look on his face when she told him about her pregnancy. He wasn't ready to become a father, and Becca wasn't ready to give up her unborn baby.

As a result, Becca decided to break up with him. They had a bitter argument that night as Emit tried to make her stay.

"You'll regret this, Becca!" Emit yelled at her. "You'll regret leaving me for this child!"

Since then, the fear of his return haunted her.

What if he changed his mind and came back to get Mira? What if he decided to hurt me by taking my little girl away?

The fear always bothered her, and it ultimately manifested in her nightmares.

Sitting upright on her bed, Becca glanced at the clock. It was 3:17 a.m.

The house was silent except for the gentle hum of the air conditioner. Still feeling her heart pounding against her chest, she swung her legs over the side of the bed.

I'll just check on Mira, she thought. Just to be sure.

She left her room and walked down the hallway toward the nursery. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door, unaware of the shocking sight waiting for her inside.

Upon opening the door, Becca's eyes went straight to the crib in the corner, expecting to see Mira's tiny form nestled among the blankets.

But the crib was empty.

No way! She thought. This can't be happening!

She rushed over to the crib, throwing aside the blankets and stuffed animals.

"No, no, no," Becca muttered. "Mira! Mira, where are you?"

A million questions popped up in her mind as she roamed around the room, checking every corner for her daughter. Her heart couldn't accept that Mira had suddenly gone missing.

Had Emit somehow taken her? She thought. Was my nightmare… true?

Becca couldn't believe what was happening.

"Mom?" Becca called out. "Mom, did you take Mira?"

She hurried down the hall to her mother's room, praying that Rose had simply decided to let Mira sleep with her. But her worst fears came alive when she flung open the door.

Rose was alone in the bed.

"Becca?" Rose mumbled, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. "What's wrong?"

"Mira's gone," Becca choked out. "She's not in her crib. I thought maybe you had her, but—"

"What do you mean, gone?" Rose interrupted. "Have you checked the whole house?"

"Not yet." Becca shook her head before turning around to leave the room. "I... I need to look everywhere."

As Rose hurried to join the search, Becca's mind whirled with possibilities, each more terrifying than the last.

Had someone broken in? Had Mira somehow climbed out of her crib? The rational part of her brain knew that was impossible because Mira was only seven months old, but fear had taken hold.

"Mira?" Becca called out while checking every room, every closet, and peeking behind every piece of furniture.

Meanwhile, Rose followed her daughter into every room, feeling equally worried about her missing granddaughter.

After checking every room in the house, Becca rushed over to the kitchen. That's when she saw something on the counter that sent a shiver down her spine.

A single strand of red hair.

She only knew one person with red hair… it was her sister, Elena.

Elena had visited just yesterday, her eyes red-rimmed from crying. She had confided in Becca about her husband leaving her.

"I can't bear the loneliness, Becca," Elena had told her. "It's just too difficult."

Becca had offered what comfort she could yesterday. She felt terrible for her sister, but things had taken an unexpected turn now.

"Mom," Becca called out. "I think I know where Mira might be."

"Where?" Rose asked.

"With Elena," Becca said as she moved toward the front door. "She was here yesterday, and she seemed... off. I think she might have taken Mira."

As they prepared to leave, a faint sound caught Becca's attention. It was a cry. A soft but unmistakable cry.

And it was coming from the basement.

Becca rushed toward the basement door with Rose right behind her. The cry grew louder as they opened the door and crept down the stairs.

Becca gasped when she reached the bottom of the staircase.

"Elena?" she said. "What are you doing here?"

Elena was sitting on the bottom step, cradling Mira in her arms. Her red hair gleamed in the dim light.

"I… I'm sorry, Becca," she said, looking up as tears trickled down her cheeks. "I just… I couldn't be alone anymore. I needed to hold her, just for a little while."

Becca was shocked. She quickly knelt beside Elena and took Mira from her arms.

"Elena, you can't just take Mira like that," she said, holding her little girl tightly against her chest. "Do you realize how scared I was?"

"I know, I know," Elena sobbed. "I'm so sorry. It's just... ever since I lost the baby, and Ben left... I've felt so empty inside. Holding Mira, it was like I could breathe again."

"Oh, dear," Rose sighed, placing a comforting hand on Elena's shoulder. "You didn't have to break into the house at this hour. Why didn't you tell us how bad things had gotten? We could've helped you."

"I didn't want to be a burden, Mom," Elena said, wiping her tears. "You all have your own lives and so many problems to deal with. I thought I could handle it on my own, but..."

"But you don't have to," Becca finished for her, her anger melting away as she saw the depth of her sister's pain.

She shifted Mira to one arm and reached out to take Elena's hand.

"We're family. We're here for you, always."

Rose nodded in agreement. "Elena, honey, you're not alone in this. We may not understand exactly what you're going through, but we want to help."

"I miss her so much," Elena whispered as fresh tears streamed down her face. "The baby I never got to meet. And then Ben... he couldn't handle it. He just left, like it was all my fault."

That's when Becca felt guilty.

Guilty of being too caught up in her fears and insecurities as a new mother. She felt she should have been there for Elena when she lost her baby. All this time, Becca only focused on her problems, not thinking about what Elena went through.

"I have an idea," Becca said suddenly. "Why don't you move in with us for a while? We have the spare room, and this way, you won't have to face everything alone."

"No, I…" Elena hesitated. "I don't want to burden you both."

"You aren't burdening us, honey," Rose assured her. "It's what family does. We support each other, especially in times like these."

"Exactly!" Becca smiled, rubbing her hand on Mira's back.

Elena's gaze shifted from Rose to Becca, and then to Mira.

"Okay," she said softly. "Thank you for this… Both of you."

"Come, let's go upstairs," Becca urged, looking towards the basement door.

As they made their way back upstairs, Becca felt relieved knowing her daughter was safe. The fear that had gripped her earlier began to fade.

Over the next few months, the house settled into a new rhythm.

Elena slowly began to heal. She found comfort in her new daily routine and the constant support of her sister and mother. Meanwhile, Becca also understood that she needed her family's support to raise Mira in a healthy environment.

The fear of Emit's return had slowly started to fade.
