My Sister-in-Law Despises Our Christmas Gifts & Sends Demanding Wishlist to Entire Family This Year
When Abbie met her sister-in-law, Paige, she never expected her to become so demanding. But this Christmas, Paige crossed a line and sent an extravagant wish list to the whole family. Abbie's parents, tired of her entitlement, decided it was time to teach her a lasting lesson.
The first time my brother Gary introduced me to Paige, she seemed very friendly. No one in the family thought she'd become this demanding person who never appreciated anything.
It all started when Paige said terrible things about our Christmas gifts.

As someone who works in finance at a small firm and still lives at home to support my aging parents, I know the value of a thoughtful, heartfelt gift.
Every year, my mom, dad, brother Gary, his wife Paige, and their three kids gather on Christmas. Like every other average American family, we all exchange presents on Christmas.
We all agree that's the most wonderful time of the year, except Paige. For her, exchanging gifts had always been a point of contention.

She has always disliked whatever we've given her, despite our efforts. And it's not as if we skimp on quality. We just put more emphasis on the kids, who are always delighted with their presents.
Take last Christmas, for example. I bought Paige a skincare bundle from a popular brand I saw trending on social media. Everyone online seemed to love it. It was one of those things that gave you "glass skin."

I was super excited to gift it to her and thought she'd love it. When she unwrapped it and looked at it with eyes wide open, I thought she'd exclaim with excitement and thank me.
Instead, she frowned and said, "This isn't really my style, Abbie."
My mom, who was sitting beside me, gave me a sympathetic look, clearly hurt by Paige's reaction.
The year before that, I took it a step further, going out of my way to order a customized bag with her initials monogrammed on it.

The bag was sturdy, elegant, and versatile. Mom and I thought it was just perfect for a mom of three.
But Paige barely looked at it before wrinkling her nose and saying, "A bit tacky, don't you think?"
Each time she rejected a gift, it stung. I couldn't understand why she wouldn't just say "thank you" and leave it at that.
What hurt me more was that my brother never said a word to her about it.
A few days after Christmas last year, I hinted to him to ask her to be polite.

"Maybe Paige could at least pretend to like our gifts, just for Mom and Dad's sake?"
I thought Gary would understand, but I was wrong.
He just brushed it off, saying, "You guys should just get her better gifts."
Better gifts? I thought. I've tried everything, Gary!
Mom and I felt disheartened whenever Paige would openly pass negative comments about our gifts. We really tried to put thought into the presents, only to have them dismissed.

Another time, Mom gave Paige a lovely teapot, simple yet elegant, thinking she'd appreciate the gesture. Paige responded with a blank stare, muttering, "I don't need more kitchenware."
I could see Mom's face fall, though she quickly composed herself.
Despite Paige's attitude, Gary continued to take her side, shrugging off her rudeness. It frustrated me to no end. Was a little gratitude too much to ask?

This year, we started hunting for gifts for the family about six weeks before Christmas. We wanted to get something nice for the kids because they were always appreciative and excited no matter what we picked.
We got remote-controlled cars at a great price for the boys and a dollhouse for their little sister. Christmas was about making the kids happy, after all.
But, of course, we had to think of something for Paige too, even though her reactions to our gifts were always disappointing.

Then, about a month before Christmas, an email from Paige landed in our inboxes.
It wasn't just an email. It was a detailed wish list of exactly what she wanted as Christmas gifts. I opened it, only to find a long list of designer items including luxury perfumes, handbags, and high-end clothes.
The kicker? A line at the end that read, No cheap skincare sets, tacky bags, or kitchenware, please.
I was outraged.
"Are you seeing this, Mom?" I practically shouted, showing her the email.

Mom's face turned red as she read it. "Unbelievable. After all the thought we put into her gifts each year."
"It's like she's never appreciated a single thing we've done for her," I said, fuming. "And it's not as if she's given us anything close to these luxury items!"
My dad, however, looked thoughtful. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, "Calm down, Abbie. I have an idea on how to handle this."
Mom and I exchanged glances.
"What are you thinking, Dad?" I asked.

"Let's just say," he replied with a grin, "that we're going to help Paige understand that our family doesn't operate on entitlement."
When we all gathered at Mom and Dad's for our traditional Christmas Eve dinner and gift exchange, everything was going smoothly.
The kids were jumping with excitement, tearing into their presents with gleeful abandon. Meanwhile, Paige kept glancing around the room, trying to locate the pile of designer gifts that she felt entitled to.

But when her name was skipped over during the gift distribution, she looked at us with wide eyes.
"Where's my gift?" she demanded, her voice dripping with petulance.
I took a deep breath and looked at Mom, signaling her to take the lead.
"Actually, Paige, there isn't one for you this year."
Paige's face turned red. "What do you mean there's no gift? You guys always get me something."

Dad stepped in then, unfazed by Paige's outburst.
"We did have something in mind for you, Paige," he said. "But after that little stunt with the wish list, we decided you don't deserve it. After all, Christmas is about spending time with family, not checking off luxurious wish lists."
Paige sputtered, turning to Gary for backup, but he just shifted uncomfortably. I guess he finally understood he shouldn't have supported his wife's unacceptable behavior.

"However, we do have an offer for you. If you'd like to receive a gift, we'd be happy to give you something that WE choose. No luxury requests, just a simple, heartfelt gift. How does that sound?"
There was silence in the room. You could have literally heard a pin drop.
Paige looked at Gary again, but he just nodded. He wanted her to go ahead and accept Dad's offer.
After a long, awkward silence, she slowly nodded.
"Okay," she mumbled. "I'll take whatever you have."

That's when Mom took out a small box that she'd hidden behind the couch. She handed it to Paige with a smile.
"We hope you like it," Mom said.
Her eyes widened in excitement as she unwrapped the box.
"Oh my… This is lovely!" she said, pulling out a small designer bag from the box. "I… I didn't expect this. It's beautiful!"

"It's not one of the high-end designer bags you mentioned in your wish list," I began. "But we still had to pool in money to get this for you, Paige. Dad thought this gift would make you understand it's not easy for us to buy such expensive gifts."
"Buying this meant giving up a few things ourselves," Dad added. "We don't typically give these kinds of gifts because they're a strain for us, and we prefer thoughtful, meaningful presents over expensive items. We hope you can understand."

She held the designer purse a bit closer, glancing down as though unsure of what to say.
Finally, with a deep breath, she looked up with regret in her eyes.
"I'm sorry. I didn't realize how much effort you put into this," she said quietly. "I thought it was just… I don't know… easier for you."
Mom took a step closer, placing a gentle hand on Paige's arm.

"Every gift we've given you over the years was chosen with love, Paige. We may not have always bought the most expensive items, but we thought hard about what would make you happy. Each one took time and care."
Paige's face softened, and she gave a small, embarrassed nod. "I feel awful. I see now how wrong it was to send that list. It wasn't fair to any of you. Or respectful."
Gary, who had been standing beside her, stepped forward.

"Mom, Dad, Abbie," he began, looking each of us in the eye. "I'm really sorry too. I never should've brushed off Paige's reactions or dismissed how you felt. I thought I was just keeping the peace, but I should've been honest with her and stood by you."
"And you're right, Dad," he continued. "Christmas isn't about the price tags. It's about being with family, and appreciating the thought behind every gift."
This Christmas, I learned that sometimes the best gifts are those that help us see what truly matters. I'm grateful that Paige finally understood, and I hope she remembers it next year.
What do you think? Would you have gone through with our plan to help Paige understand, or would you have done something different?
