'Final Straw': The Lewandowski Question That May Have Sealed Kristi Noem's Fate in DHS
A single question delivered in the middle of a high-profile congressional hearing sent shockwaves through Washington. Within days, a powerful cabinet official was out of a job as whispers of a rumored affair and mounting political tensions collided in a dramatic public showdown.
President Donald Trump abruptly removed Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after a series of controversies that had been simmering for months inside the administration.

But according to sources familiar with the decision, the tipping point came during a tense House hearing when a lawmaker asked Noem directly about her alleged relationship with longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski.
The Question That Shocked a Congressional Hearing
The controversy erupted during a dramatic House Judiciary Committee hearing when Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove confronted Noem with a question that immediately stunned the room.
"So, Secretary Noem, at any time during your tenure as director of Department of Homeland Security, have you had sexual relations with Corey Lwendowski?" Kamlager-Dove asked during the hearing.

"Mr. Chairman, I am shocked that we're going down and peddling tabloid garbage in this committee today," Noem responded. "Ma'am, one thing that I would tell you is that he is a special government employee who works for the White House. There are thousands of them in the federal government."
But when Noem did not directly answer the explosive question, Kamlager-Dove interrupted and pressed further. "It is okay for you to be offended by the question. But it is also a real question, and you should be able to answer the question clearly and without any hesitation," she said.
The congresswoman then doubled down on her argument. "If someone is asking if you or any federal official is sleeping with their subordinate, you should be wanting to answer that question, because it is not about your sex life, it is about your judgment," she added.
The Moment That Reportedly Sealed Her Fate
Behind closed doors, frustration with Noem had reportedly been building for weeks. Several sources familiar with internal discussions said Trump had already been irritated by multiple issues involving the Homeland Security secretary.
But the hearing — and her response to the Lewandowski question — reportedly pushed matters over the edge. "The question about the affair at the hearing was actually the final straw," one source said. Another insider described a growing sense of frustration inside the administration. "It kept mounting up," the source said.

A third person familiar with the situation said the hearings created a point of no return. "There was just no going back with the two hearings. It all became about her and him," the person revealed.
Lewandowski himself refused to speculate when asked about the situation. "You're asking me to speculate on things that I have no insight into," he said.
Rumors That Had Been Circulating for Years
The alleged relationship between Noem and Lewandowski had been whispered about in political circles for years. Multiple sources previously told reporters that the two were involved in a relationship dating back to 2019 — if not earlier. Both Noem and Lewandowski are married.
DailyMail.com first reported the alleged affair, citing sources who warned that the rumored relationship could damage Noem's political future.
When first approached about the allegations, neither party publicly denied them. Noem later responded through a spokesman who forcefully rejected the claim. Her spokesman, Ian Fury, insisted the pair had never had an affair.
Still, insiders said the rumors had long been an open secret among political insiders. One source told The New York Post that the pair appeared unusually close during the 2021 Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando. "I remember it was so absurdly blatant and public," the person said.

Another insider suggested the situation had been quietly discussed for years. "This has been a known, open thing and we've all been waiting for it to blow up at some point," the person claimed.
Tensions Inside Homeland Security
The speculation also raised eyebrows because Lewandowski held influence within the Department of Homeland Security. He served as an unpaid special government employee and was widely described as functioning like an unofficial chief of staff to Noem.
A report from The Wall Street Journal described one unusual incident involving a Coast Guard pilot. According to the report, Lewandowski once fired the pilot after a blanket belonging to Noem was not transferred to a replacement aircraft during an official trip.

The pilot was later reinstated because there was no other available pilot to fly the group home. Behind the scenes, tensions inside the department had reportedly been simmering.
When word of Noem's removal began circulating through the agency, the reaction was striking. One insider told the Washington Examiner: "People in the office are actually crying out of happiness."
More Controversies Add Fuel to the Fire
The Lewandowski controversy was not the only issue creating headaches for the administration. Trump was also reportedly angered after Noem told senators that he had approved a $220 million border security advertising campaign. But the president quickly pushed back. "I never knew anything about it," Trump told Reuters in a phone interview.
One advertisement showed Noem riding a horse in front of Mount Rushmore while delivering a stern warning to migrants attempting to cross the border illegally.
Trump later confirmed the leadership change on Truth Social. "I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026," Trump wrote.
Trump also praised Noem's performance, saying she had delivered significant results during her tenure — especially on border security — and confirmed she would move into a new role as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas.
Noem Breaks Her Silence After Removal
Despite the sudden change, Noem quickly sought to project confidence and continuity. She appeared at a law enforcement conference shortly after the announcement and focused on the agency's mission.
In a statement, she thanked Trump for the new role. "In this new role, I will be able to build on the partnerships and national security expertise, I forged over my time as Secretary of Homeland Security."
She also defended the department's record during her leadership. "We have made historic accomplishments at the Department of Homeland Security to make America safe again," she said.
Noem's time as Homeland Security secretary had already been surrounded by controversy and intense public scrutiny. Critics frequently targeted her public image and leadership style during immigration operations, even giving her the nickname "ICE Barbie."
But according to multiple sources close to the situation, the stunning congressional hearing confrontation about Lewandowski ultimately forced the administration to confront the controversy head-on.
Mounting Political Pressure Before Her Removal
Long before the dramatic congressional showdown that ultimately sealed her fate, political pressure on Noem had already been intensifying behind the scenes.

For months, lawmakers in Washington had been questioning her leadership at the Department of Homeland Security, and tensions reached a boiling point earlier this year.
In January, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives warned that they would pursue impeachment proceedings if President Donald Trump did not remove her from office.
The threats followed two deadly incidents in Minnesota in which U.S. citizens were shot by immigration agents, sparking national outrage and renewed scrutiny of the department. Democratic lawmakers argued that the shootings raised serious concerns about oversight, accountability, and the conduct of federal immigration agents.

At the same time, criticism was not limited to one party. At least two Republican senators publicly suggested that Noem should step aside.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina told reporters he believed she should be removed from office. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska also voiced support for her departure.
The controversy deepened after the Department of Homeland Security initially described the victims in the Minnesota shootings as aggressors.

However, video evidence later appeared to contradict that claim, fueling outrage among lawmakers and the public alike. The political fallout soon spread beyond Capitol Hill hearings.
Democrats refused to approve additional funding for DHS while the controversy remained unresolved — a standoff that ultimately contributed to a partial government shutdown affecting the department.
Leadership Turmoil Behind Closed Doors
While the political pressure mounted in public, internal tensions inside DHS were reportedly escalating as well. Multiple reports indicated that Noem clashed with several senior officials across the sprawling agency. Disagreements were said to have erupted with leaders at both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Several longtime government employees also left the department during her tenure. Some departing officials reportedly cited management changes and growing internal disputes as reasons for their exit.
Noem was also said to have disagreed with border czar Tom Homan over how immigration enforcement operations should be handled.
The tensions only intensified following the Minnesota incidents. In response, the administration brought Homan in to help stabilize the situation and oversee the federal response.

Officials later described the turmoil inside DHS as part of a broader pattern of leadership challenges that had been developing for months.
Questions Swirl over Lewandowski's Influence
As the political storm grew, Lewandowski's unusual role inside the department became another flashpoint. Although he was not a salaried federal employee, Lewandowski served as a special government employee and held significant advisory influence.
Many inside DHS viewed him as one of the most powerful figures surrounding Noem, despite his unofficial status. That arrangement quickly drew scrutiny from lawmakers.

During congressional hearings, Senator Richard Blumenthal asked directly whether Lewandowski had any involvement in approving department contracts. Noem firmly denied that he played any such role.
But an investigation by ProPublica later reported that internal records and accounts from current and former officials appeared to contradict that claim.
According to the report, Lewandowski had approved a multimillion-dollar equipment contract and had also signed off on other major spending decisions.
A DHS spokesperson pushed back against the allegations. "Mr. Lewandowski does NOT play a role in approving contracts."
The spokesperson also emphasized that Lewandowski served without pay. "Mr. Lewandowski does not receive a salary or any federal government benefits. He volunteers his time to serve the American people."
Despite those assurances, the revelations added to growing concerns about transparency, influence, and oversight within the department.
A Long Political Alliance
Lewandowski has been a central figure in Trump-world politics for years. He first rose to prominence as Donald Trump's campaign manager during the 2016 presidential race.

Later, he became an adviser to Noem during her time as governor of South Dakota. Political insiders have long noted that the two worked closely together during that period and frequently traveled together for political events.
At one point, Noem attempted to appoint Lewandowski as her chief of staff while she was governor. The White House reportedly blocked that move. Instead, he later joined the administration as a special government employee — a position that allowed him to advise the department without formally serving as a full-time federal official.
Both Noem and Lewandowski are married. Noem married her husband, Bryon Noem, in 1992, and the couple share three children and several grandchildren.
Bryon Noem runs a crop insurance business in South Dakota and has long supported his wife's political career. Lewandowski, meanwhile, has been married to Alison Hardy since 2005, and they also have children.
Growing Criticism of Noem's Leadership
Even before the explosive congressional hearings that captured national attention, criticism of Noem's leadership had been steadily building. Her role at DHS placed her at the center of some of the administration's most controversial immigration policies.
Lawmakers questioned several of the department's spending decisions and raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest within the agency. During earlier congressional hearings that same week, several Democratic lawmakers openly challenged her leadership.

Representative Pramila Jayapal accused the department of undermining its own mission to protect residents while respecting constitutional protections. Jayapal argued that the agency's direction under Noem represented a serious failure of leadership and said she should step down from the role.
Meanwhile, political pressure continued to mount as lawmakers refused to approve new funding for DHS while the controversies remained unresolved.
Questions Linger over Lewandowski's Future
With Noem now leaving the department, uncertainty has begun to swirl around Lewandowski's future inside the administration. Some officials believe his influence at DHS will disappear along with her departure.

Others believe he could eventually return to a more formal political role, noting that he has repeatedly moved in and out of Trump's inner circle over the years. For now, Lewandowski has described himself simply as a volunteer adviser working with the administration.
But after months of political turmoil, internal disputes, and growing scrutiny of his relationship with Kristi Noem, the leadership shake-up at DHS marks the start of a new — and uncertain — chapter for the agency.
