My MIL Thought I Was Cheating on Her Daughter and Tried to Teach Me a Harsh Lesson
When Mike plans a surprise weekend away for his and Steph's anniversary, he hires an event planner to do most of the work. But when a nosy mother-in-law catches wind of Mike with another woman, things get out of control...
So, let me set a scene for you. It's hilarious now, but it was anything but when it actually happened.

I'm Mike and I've been happily married to my wife, Steph, for ten years. We had a perfect little life with our eight-year-old son, Jack. Steph and I are the kind of couple that people envy.
As lame as it sounds, we have been completely in sync since we got married, finishing each other's sentences, the whole deal.
Or at least, we were until my mother-in-law, Karen, got involved.

"I'm going to surprise Mom for our anniversary," I told Jack when we were kicking a ball around outside one afternoon.
"Just don't decide on having another kid," Jack said, giggling as he spoke.
Well, I didn't plan on that, but I did want to surprise Steph with a romantic weekend getaway to celebrate our anniversary.

I wanted everything to be perfect, so I hired an event planner to hold down the fort.
"Catherine," I told her when I sat across from her in her office. "I need this weekend to be perfect. I know that it's small scale compared to the events you plan, but I need it to be perfect for Steph. She deserves this."
Catherine beamed, and I thought she actually looked quite beautiful. Not as beautiful as my wife, but lovely nonetheless.

She was great to work with too. She was professional, attentive, and yes, attractive.
"Of course, Mike," she said, opening a notebook to start taking down notes. "What do you want specifically? There is a hotel just out of town that I've worked with before. They'll allow more or less anything romantic."
"You mean the flowers and candles and things?" I asked.

"Yes, but if you have anything else in mind, too..." she said, letting her words hang in the air.
"You know what? Go all out, Catherine," I said. "I don't mind the cost. Just make sure that there's lots of chocolate-covered strawberries, because Steph loves those."
Catherine smiled and nodded.

"I'll work on it," she said. "But I'll take you to the hotel this weekend, you can check it out and decide on what you like and what you don't."
Sounds good, right? Wrong.
This is where it started to go south.
So, on Saturday, I decided to take Catherine up on her offer and go to check out the hotel.

It was about fifteen minutes out of town, so it was all good for a quick in and out and back home before Steph even missed me.
Naturally, things weren't going to be that easy.
I picked Catherine up from her office, and we were just about to leave town when I decided that we should stop at a gas station first.

"Sorry, Catherine," I said. "I just want to fuel up the car. And I'm also starving; let's just grab some sandwiches to eat as we drive."
"I could do with a chicken and mayo sandwich," Catherine said excitedly.
As luck would have it, Karen, my mother-in-law, was there fueling up her car and saw us.
But I didn't know this.

Yet.
Anyway, Karen spotted me with Catherine, and from there, her overactive imagination ran wild. The poor woman was convinced that I was cheating on her daughter.
Karen decided to take matters into her own hands. That evening, she followed us to the hotel, lurking in the shadows like some sort of vigilante mother-in-law.

"This place is perfect," I said. "I love it. Steph is going to love it! Yes, this is it. Go ahead and do whatever you need to, Catherine."
"Done and done," Catherine said. "I've ordered more than enough roses for the bedroom, too."
Karen decided to take matters into her own hands. As we took off back home, unknown to us, Karen followed us back to Catherine's office.
But instead of confronting me, she waited in the parking lot and ended up following Catherine home instead!

Honestly, it was just classic Karen behavior.
The next morning, Karen showed up at Catherine's house and, with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, told Catherine's husband, Steve, that his wife was cheating on him with me.
Steve, just by the way, is a professional boxer.

So, look at this equation:
We had a furious boxer, an equally furious Karen, and me, a man who knew nothing of the sort at the time.
Fast forward to the night before the big anniversary surprise. Catherine and I went back to the hotel to finalize everything.
The plan was simple. I was going to check in with Catherine, make sure that everything was in place, secure the menu with the hotel kitchen (with all of Steph's favorites highlighted), and then leave. Only to return the next day with my wife.

But life is never that simple, is it?
Not with good old Karen, at least.
As Catherine and I were making the final touches to the room, Karen, Steph, and Steve were outside the door, ready to burst in.
But again, I didn't know any of this yet. So I was oblivious to the scene outside the hotel room. Instead, I tossed rose petals across the room.

"Aren't you going to do it properly, Mike?" Catherine asked, giggling.
"What do you mean, properly?" I laughed with her.
"Tossing rose petals around randomly takes away the aesthetic; make it beautiful!"
In reply, I tossed a handful of petals onto her.
Catherine laughed loudly, which was probably the reason why the three people I least expected to see barged in.

But that wasn't the scene they walked into.
I was adjusting a candle when Catherine pulled me towards her and kissed me! I was too shocked to react. And that's when the door burst open.
There I was, standing in the middle of a romantically decorated hotel room, awkwardly holding Catherine in my arms, with my wife, her mother, and an enraged boxer staring at us.
It was the stuff of nightmares and a rom-com, too.

Steve lunged towards me, ready to turn my face into a punching bag. I braced myself for the impact and the blow, but Catherine stepped in, whistling.
"Wait!" she shouted when she got Steve's attention. "This isn't what it looks like!"
To her credit, Catherine quickly explained the situation. She admitted that she had developed feelings for me and kissed me.

"Look, it's one-sided. I'm not even really into Mike. Mike is a wonderful client and a devoted husband. I was the one who misinterpreted things. And seeing him do this lovely thing for his wife? I mean, Steve, life is about more than boxing."
"What's it about then?" Steve asked, looking dumbfounded.
I wanted to laugh.
"This is for me?" Steph asked, surprised as she looked around the room.

Karen, still skeptical, glared at me, clicking her tongue.
"Mom," Steph said. "I trust Mike, obviously. If he says nothing happened, then I believe him."
Steve, still fuming, but somewhat calmed by Catherine's confession, reluctantly backed off. The tension in the room was palpable, but at least nobody was trying to punch my face in anymore.
I spent the next few minutes explaining everything to Steph and Karen.
"It's all for you, Stephy," I said. "I just wanted our anniversary to be special."

Steph softened quickly, seeing the effort that I had put into the surprise.
Karen, on the other hand, wasn't so easily convinced. She kept muttering about how things still seemed fishy, but at least she wasn't actively plotting my death.
Or maybe she was; she was Karen, after all.
As for Steve, he took Catherine home, and from what I heard from her, they had a long, serious talk about their relationship. Shame, hopefully, things work out for them.

The next day, Steph and I got to enjoy our romantic weekend together. It took a bit of an effort to get Karen to babysit Jack, but his little face sealed the deal.
The room was perfect, the dinner was exquisite, and we had a great time reminiscing about our ten years together.

Now, every time we tell this story, we can't help but laugh.
It's become one of those legendary family tales that gets funnier with each retelling. I mean, who would have thought that a simple anniversary surprise could turn into such a fiasco?
As much as I love my mother-in-law, I've learned to keep her out of the loop when planning surprises. You never know what she might do next.

My Daughter Stopped Talking When My MIL Started Babysitting Her – My Wife & I Found Her Drawing That Exposed MIL
When Lucas' mother-in-law, Catherine, resurfaces after ten years, he and Emily are perplexed. However, Emily wants to seize the moment and allow her mother to get to know Allison, their daughter. But things quickly go downhill when the couple realizes that Catherine is doing more harm than good.
I knew that when I married Emily, her family would cut her off. I wasn't what they expected. I didn't come from a prominent family, nor did I have a big bank balance.
"I don't care, Lucas," Emily said. "They always think they know best, but this time, they're wrong."
After our wedding, Emily's parents vanished from her life — only resurfacing to wish her a happy birthday via text or to send a Christmas card with a series of photographs of themselves.

I always wondered if it bothered Emily, they were her parents after all.
"No," she said when I asked her about it one day. "They chose to leave me, not the other way around."
It's been ten years, and Emily and I have blossomed. Our careers have taken off, so we're constantly padding our finances. And we have a daughter, nine-year-old Allison.
As my parents live in a different country, and Emily's parents have disappeared on us, Allison has only had her parents and our closest friends to rely on.
Until recently.
Catherine, Emily's mother, randomly appeared on our doorstep. She held a fruit basket and a bottle of wine.

"Emily," she said after I let her in. "I'm back!"
My wife's confusion was written all over her face. She continued to chop vegetables for our dinner and listened as her mother spoke.
"I've left your father," Catherine said. "I realized that he was the one who kept me away from you. I shouldn't have listened."
I took over the cooking and let Emily deal with her mother. I knew that despite everything Emily had said over the years, she wouldn't turn her mother away. She missed her more than she could say.
Hours later, Emily and her mother were getting on like a house on fire. Catherine's excitement at seeing Allison did seem wholesome, but I couldn't shake a nagging feeling in my gut.
"Mom," Emily told Catherine. "Ali has really taken to you. Maybe you could spend more time with her. Take her for ice cream, and maybe even babysit sometimes?"
