What to Do with Old Socks: Easy Ways to Reuse Them
Socks have gone from hidden basics to fashion statements, showing up on runways, at festivals and all over social media. But even the boldest or coziest pair eventually wears out — and when it does, there are plenty of smart ways to give those old socks a second life.
Not long ago, socks were mostly an afterthought — hidden under trousers or tucked inside shoes. Now they’re having a moment.
From fashion runways to music festivals, socks are being styled on purpose, worn higher, and designed to stand out.

Retailers report rising sales, and fashion experts say socks have moved from functional basics to statement pieces.
But socks aren’t just about style. They can also play a small role in better sleep. Behavioral sleep specialist Michelle Drerup says wearing socks to bed may actually help you fall asleep faster.

“By wearing socks to bed and warming your feet, you may actually lower your core body temperature and fall asleep faster,” she said.
A small 2018 study found that young men who wore socks fell asleep nearly eight minutes faster and slept longer, with fewer nighttime awakenings.
Eventually, though, even the trendiest or coziest pair gets worn out. Instead of throwing them away, there are easy ways to reuse old socks around the house.

Make Cleaning Easier
Old socks are surprisingly useful for dusting. Carolyn Forté of the Good Housekeeping Institute says they work especially well on blinds, plant leaves, and stair railings. Just slip one over your hand and wipe.
They also double as cleaning cloths. Dampen a sock with warm, soapy water and use it to clean walls, baseboards, or tabletops.
For fragile items like lightbulbs or chandeliers, Forté suggests wearing one damp sock on one hand and a dry sock on the other to wash and dry carefully.

Use Them for Storage and Travel
Old socks can help protect items in storage. Stuff handbags with rolled-up socks to help them keep their shape.
Wrap delicate ornaments in socks before boxing them up to prevent damage. They can also cover long, narrow items like candlestick holders.
When traveling, clean socks can hold jewelry to prevent tangling or scratching inside a suitcase.

Freshen and Fix
Socks can solve small household problems, too. Fill one with baking soda, tie it off, and place it inside shoes to help absorb odors.
For drafty doors, stuff worn socks with rice or pillow filling and stitch the ends closed to create a simple draft stopper.
You can even cut socks into small pieces to use as stuffing for DIY throw pillows. And if you can’t find a shoe-polishing brush, a sock works just as well.

Socks may be trending, and they might even help you sleep. But when they’re too worn to wear, they still have plenty of life left in them — you just have to get a little creative.
