King Charles’ Offer for Prince Harry to Stay at Buckingham Palace ‘Withdrawn’ at ‘Last Moment’
The Duke of Sussex's homecoming has taken an unexpected turn, overshadowed by a last-minute dispute over where he would stay. What was meant to be a moment of reconciliation has instead reignited questions about his relationship with the palace.
Prince Harry, 41, has arrived in the United Kingdom for the Year-to-Go celebrations ahead of the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027. His visit comes just weeks after reports surfaced that King Charles had offered him accommodation at Buckingham Palace during his stay.

That offer, however, was reportedly rescinded. According to a spokesman for the Duke, the withdrawal came shortly after the BBC first reported that Harry had accepted the invitation to stay at the royal residence.
Speculation over whether Harry would take up the offer had been swirling for more than a week, with confirmation only arriving on Saturday, July 4. By the time he responded, though, he was reportedly told he had missed his window.
Complicating matters further is an ongoing dispute over security. The Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (RAVEC) declined to provide taxpayer-funded protection to the Duke and his family, a decision that ultimately shaped his travel plans.

As a result, Harry chose to make the trip to London alone this past weekend, leaving behind his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. His team had reportedly spent several days searching for alternative ways to bring the family to the UK safely.
Palace insiders tell a slightly different version of events. According to those sources, Harry initially turned down the accommodation offer before accepting it later on Saturday, despite having been given until the end of last week to decide.
Adding another layer of tension, a court ruling in a case brought by Harry and several other high-profile figures, including Elton John and Elizabeth Hurley, against the publishers of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday, was expected Tuesday, July 7.

Sources close to the situation suggested that King Charles, 77, could not risk appearing to influence proceedings while litigation was still active. In a statement issued Monday, July 6, a spokesman for Prince Harry addressed the confusion directly.
"I am aware of multiple briefings from Buckingham Palace last week suggesting that the Duke had not accepted the offer of accommodation at a Royal Residence," the spokesman began.

The statement continued, explaining the sequence of events from the Duke's side:
"Following RAVEC's decision not to provide security for his family, the Duke spent last week making alternative security arrangements. Once those arrangements were in place, he was able to formally accept the offer of accommodation for himself over the weekend."

The spokesperson didn't hold back on expressing frustration over the timing:
"It is therefore disappointing that the offer has now been withdrawn, with Tuesday's judgment in the Associated Newspapers Limited case cited as the reason. Buckingham Palace has, however, been aware of that judgment since last Thursday."
"It is therefore unclear why, having formally accepted the accommodation offer, it has now been withdrawn at the last moment," the statement added.

The stakes were especially high given that Harry and Meghan had hoped this trip would mark their children's first visit to Britain since 2022. The Duke reportedly wanted Archie and Lilibet to experience the country where he was raised and, potentially, to spend time with their grandfather, King Charles.
With the couple's children absent from this leg of the trip, new questions are emerging about whether Meghan and the kids might still join Harry before the visit concludes, and whether any family reunion will ultimately take place.
