Jared Hibbard-Swanson, a food security and safety program manager at Oregon State University Extension Service, stresses that the biggest risk comes from creative reuse like washing and reusing single-use takeout containers over and over, which increases the chance of toxins migrating into food, along with bacterial growth and faster deterioration.

So What Exactly Is BPA?
BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a chemical used to harden plastic. It shows up in polycarbonate bottles, some food can linings, and plenty of everyday plastics. In animal studies, BPA behaves like the hormone estrogen, and there's ongoing debate about how directly those animal findings apply to humans.
One reassuring thing about BPA is that once it’s ingested, the liver metabolizes it quickly, and it's usually gone from the body within 24 hours. A single exposure, such as one reheated lunch, isn’t cause for concern. But repeated, regular exposure over time is.

Nearly everyone in the U.S. has measurable levels of BPA in their system. In a CDC study of over 2,500 people, BPA showed up in 93 percent of urine samples tested. That's not a cause for panic, but it is reason enough to be careful.

They’re not just for pickles and jam. Canning jars handle a wide temperature range, including freezing, and they're durable, affordable, and often sold in bulk. Use them for soups, sauces, pantry staples, whatever needs a reliable home.

Ceramic
Ceramic containers won't leach chemicals into food, and they're naturally nonstick, which makes them great for reheating leftovers. The tradeoff is fragility. They chip more easily than glass, and they're not built for high heat.

Stainless steel
This alternative is becoming more popular because it's eco-friendly, durable, dishwasher safe, and completely odor-resistant. But there are downsides. It's not microwave or oven-safe, and you can't see what's inside without opening it.
