After crossing paths with a young Wiz Khalifa, Chevy Woods was presented with an opportunity that forced him to rethink his future. As their friendship grew, so did the possibility of a life far removed from the one he knew.

Long before he became one of Taylor Gang's most recognizable artists, Chevy Woods faced a life-changing decision. The Pittsburgh native spent years balancing his love of music with the realities of street life, never imagining that rap would eventually become his career.

But one conversation with Wiz Khalifa changed everything. Faced with a choice between continuing down a dangerous path or taking a chance on music, Woods ultimately bet on himself — and on the friend who believed he could succeed.

Years later, that decision helped transform him from a local rapper trying to find his footing into a key member of one of hip-hop's most recognizable crews.

From Basketball Dreams to Pittsburgh's Streets

Born Kevin Woods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Woods did not initially envision a future in music. While hip-hop was always present in his life, sports occupied most of his attention growing up.

According to Woods, artists such as Snoop Dogg, Nas, and Master P were among his early influences, but becoming a rapper was never the plan. Instead, he focused on athletics and eventually earned a basketball scholarship to Robert Morris University.

It was during college that music gradually became more than a hobby. Woods began participating in local rap battles and performing at cookouts, building a reputation among friends and fellow artists throughout Pittsburgh.

Encouraged by people who recognized his talent, he started taking recording more seriously. Still, music remained secondary for much of his early adulthood.

Woods and Khalifa's relationship became especially important as the former found himself facing a crossroads.

After college, Woods spent years focused on surviving and making ends meet. Looking back, he admitted that music was not a priority during that period of his life, as his attention was directed elsewhere.

That would eventually change when a chance encounter at a Pittsburgh recording studio introduced him to another young rapper who was beginning to make a name for himself.

The Chance Studio Meeting That Changed Everything

Woods and Khalifa did not grow up together despite being from the same city. Instead, their friendship began through a chance meeting at a recording studio where both artists happened to be working on music.

According to Woods, they initially occupied separate recording rooms before crossing paths in the studio lobby. The encounter quickly led to a conversation, and Khalifa told him he liked what he was hearing.

The two ended up recording a song together that same day, a track called "Me," and the friendship took off from there. Years later, Woods recalled that the connection felt natural from the start, sharing:

"[...] From then, we just clicked tight. We've been friends, we've been brothers, you know. [...] We've just been stuck, side to side."

Woods and Khalifa's relationship became especially important as the former found himself facing a crossroads. At the time, he was still involved in street activity and wrestling with whether to continue down that path or commit fully to music.

When opportunities to tour began emerging, the decision became unavoidable. Woods later revealed that he spent more than a week debating what to do. On one side was a lifestyle he knew well. On the other was a chance to join Khalifa on tour and pursue a music career he had never seriously imagined for himself.

The turning point came when Khalifa offered a simple but powerful piece of advice. "If you put the same hustle that you use in the streets over here in the music, we ain't going to be broke," he declared. For Woods, the message resonated immediately.

Woods' laid-back delivery and melodic style allowed him to carve out his own identity while remaining an important part of the Taylor Gang family.

He could already see Khalifa's career gaining momentum, complete with tours, fans, and opportunities that seemed impossible to ignore. Rather than trying to balance both worlds, Woods made a clean break.

He later explained that he walked away from street life "cold turkey" and never returned, choosing instead to dedicate himself entirely to music. The decision proved to be one of the most important of his life.

How a Leap of Faith Led to Taylor Gang Success

In 2008, Woods officially joined Taylor Gang, the label and collective founded by Khalifa. Over the following years, he became a familiar presence alongside the rapper, appearing on songs, mixtapes, tours, and collaborative projects that helped expand the brand's reach.

Woods' laid-back delivery and melodic style allowed him to carve out his own identity while remaining an important part of the Taylor Gang family.

Throughout his career, he released projects including Gangland, The 48 Hunnid Project, and 81, building a loyal following that appreciated his honest storytelling and Pittsburgh-rooted perspective.

He also appeared alongside Khalifa on tracks such as "Taylor Gang," "No Sleep," and "On My Level," helping introduce his music to a wider audience. While his relationship with Khalifa opened doors, Woods has consistently emphasized that success required work. He shared:

"Like, I got something, you know what I mean? Like, I have something, and if I just put the real attention to it and like the real drive behind it, then it could be everything that I want. But if I just chill, then it's going to be just chill."

Over time, he grew more involved in every aspect of the creative process, paying closer attention to both the artistic and business sides of the industry. The laid-back attitude that once defined him gradually gave way to a more focused approach as he recognized the opportunities in front of him.

That mindset helped him evolve from a local Pittsburgh rapper into an established recording artist with a respected place within Taylor Gang. Looking back, Woods' story is not simply about discovering music—it is about recognizing an opportunity and having the courage to pursue it.

A chance meeting in a recording studio led to a friendship that changed the course of his life. More importantly, it provided the encouragement he needed to leave behind a world filled with uncertainty and embrace a future built around creativity.

For Woods, the gamble paid off. And it all started with one conversation, one friendship, and one promise from Wiz Khalifa that convinced him to take a different path.
