Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, are calling it quits. The split arrives seven years after the pair exchanged vows and two years after they welcomed their son, Bash Raymond Griner, in 2024.

Per court documents obtained by E! News and filed in Georgia's Fulton County Superior Court on July 30, the couple separated on July 24 and have since been living apart with no romantic involvement.

The paperwork states that "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken" and claims there is "no hope of reconciliation."

Regarding their 2-year-old son, the filing proposes that "it is in the best interests of the Child that the parties be awarded joint physical custody of the Child on a temporary and permanent basis with the parties having parenting time as determined in accordance with the Child's best interests."

Brittney has also requested that child support be established in line with Georgia's Child Support Guidelines.

The filing further asks that the couple's marital assets and debts be split evenly, and that Brittney retain "her separate, non-marital property, including but not limited to inherited property as well as pre-marital property."

The news arrives more than four years after Brittney's harrowing detainment in Russia, where she was held for nearly 300 days following her arrest at a Moscow airport for carrying cannabis oil vape cartridges in 2022.

At the time, the Connecticut Sun center had been competing for the Russian Premier League squad UMMC Ekaterinburg during the WNBA offseason when she was stopped at Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport.

She was initially handed a nine-year sentence in a penal colony that August, but was ultimately freed and returned to the United States through a prisoner exchange in December. Cherelle played a major role in publicly advocating for her wife's release.

Even so, she's acknowledged the ordeal took a toll. "I was hopeless a lot of days," Cherelle said. "You try and stay grounded, but I'm human. Still, I would never completely give up hope on my wife's life."

It wasn't until Cherelle stood in the Oval Office on December 8 and heard, alongside the rest of the world, President Biden confirm that Brittney had boarded a plane out of Russia and was finally coming home that the weight of the ordeal started to lift.

"I had thought about that moment a thousand times, and I thought I would be full of tears," she recalled. "But I was overwhelmingly happy. It was the first time I was able to finally exhale, and I'm like, 'Oh, thank God, this is such a great day.'"

"I couldn't stop touching her face," Cherelle shared of their reunion. "I was like, 'Is this really you?' It did not feel real. It was chilling—and warm. I was just holding on tight. I couldn't let her go."

The couple made the most of every moment once they were reunited. "The first night, we didn't sleep at all," Cherelle revealed.

"We just talked all night long and all morning. And it was so good to be able to do it without three weeks in between the conversation, because for 10 months we were passing letters. It was great to have that dialogue back and forth."
