Suri Cruise Reportedly Legally Distances Herself From Estranged Dad Tom Cruise

Suri, 20, appears to have taken her boldest step yet in putting distance between herself and her father. Public records suggest the change has been in place for some time, even as she quietly built a new chapter at college.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' only child, Suri, has reportedly made her separation from her father official on paper, legally trading his surname for one linked to her mother.

The move, first reported by Page Six, marks the clearest sign yet of a rift that has lingered for years between Suri and the "Mission Impossible" star.

Per the outlet, Suri swapped her last name from Cruise to Noelle, which happens to be her mother's middle name.

Records show she registered to vote in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania — where she now resides — back in October 2024, during her first year at Carnegie Mellon University.

She signed up under the name Suri Noelle, and Pennsylvania courts confirmed to Page Six that voter registration must reflect a person's legal name, effectively verifying the switch.

Interestingly, no formal name-change filing turned up in Allegheny County, leading the outlet to speculate that Suri may have handled the paperwork earlier, back in New York, before heading off to school.

She had lived there with Holmes, and depending on the county, New York either seals such requests automatically or does so upon request — which could explain why no public trace exists.

While the exact timing of the legal switch remains murky, Suri has gone by Noelle in public settings for a while now. She skipped her father's last name entirely on the program for her June 2024 graduation from LaGuardia High School, a detail that made waves at the time.

"She is showing praise for her mother by using her middle name," an insider claimed then, adding that the then-18-year-old wanted to carve out "her own identity" and possibly dodge unwanted attention. The name, the source added, would let her "avoid the paparazzi" and "start fresh at college."

That graduation moment wasn't the first hint of distance, either. Months earlier, in December 2023, Suri took on the role of Morticia Addams in her school's staging of "The Addams Family: A New Musical," with the playbill crediting her as Suri Noelle.

Cruise, a committed Scientologist, and Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006 and wed later that year. The "Dawson's Creek" alum filed for divorce in 2012, with court paperwork citing a desire "to protect Suri from Scientology" as a driving factor.

Since then, reports have painted Cruise as largely absent from his daughter's life. In sworn testimony tied to his 2012 defamation case against Bauer Media, the actor acknowledged going three months without seeing Suri right after the split.

"Listen, when there is a divorce … things change," he told attorneys in 2013. "It's not an ideal scene. It's not an ideal situation."

During that same deposition, part of a $50 million suit that was eventually settled, Cruise conceded that his devotion to Scientology had shaped the distance between them.

Asked point-blank whether Holmes had left him partly to shield Suri from the church, he replied, "That was one of the assertions, yes."

By 2016, the church was again cited as a barrier keeping father and daughter apart, given its teachings that discourage members from associating with non-followers.

With neither Suri nor Holmes practicing Scientologists, insiders claimed Cruise had little room to maintain a relationship with either. "This is his loss, his issue, his problem," one source said at the time. "He must be really brainwashed."
