1. Stained Glass Art

Engage in a beautiful art form dating back to 7th-century England. While stained glass was originally incorporated into the designs of churches and cathedrals, it is no longer confined to religious spaces.

You can now find it in people's homes, public buildings, and even everyday objects like lamps and jewelry. From small ornamental pieces to large, complex window designs, stained glass can be as intricate as you'd like it to be.

Diving into the art form, however, requires dedication and commitment. If it's something entirely new, you have to approach it as though you are learning a new skill — and that means accepting that you might not be so good at it at first. But that's part of the journey!

Since you'll be dealing with glass and likely some soldering, you'll need to gather a few essential tools to get started, including safety glasses, safety gloves, a glass cutter, breaking pliers, a glass grinder, copper foil or lead came, tallow flux, and soldering iron.

With these tools, you can start choosing your glass and create your own workshop at home. Alternatively, however, you can join a local art studio that offers classes on creating stained glass pieces.

2. Mixology

Who doesn't love a well mixed cocktail? While your local bartender can whip up your favorite drink in minutes, it actually takes a lot of skill, craftsmanship, and an extensive knowledge of flavor combinations. And while you don't have to work behind a bar, you can still master the skill set of a professional!

Take a mixology course — online or in person — to learn the fundamentals of creating a liquid masterpiece. Then, start experimenting with flavors in the comfort of your own home! Take it a step further, and invite your loved ones to showcase your new skill.

3. Video Games

You might have thought that video games are reserved for younger people, but there are several that are perfect — and even designed — for older adults. And if you've never engaged in video games, it's never too late to start.

Contrary to what some might believe, videogames offer many benefits for seniors. Studies suggest that playing video games actually improves the mental well-being of seniors, as the activity reduces stress and increases life satisfaction.

Games that require physical interaction, such as virtual reality simulations, can also help improve balance, coordination, and reflexes thanks to the quick decision-making and action required to play. Additionally, video games can improve or enhance your cognitive abilities.

A 2020 study done by the National Institute on Aging found that video games can significantly improve memory function in older adults, particularly those experiencing age-related cognitive decline.

Plus, you can enjoy all of these advantages while having fun! If you're not sure which games to choose, start with relaxing adventure games like "Animal Crossing: New Horizons" by Nintendo EPD, "Papers, Please" by 3909, and "The Sims 4" by Maxis.
