Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt Say a Third 'The Devil Wears Prada' Film Hinges on One Condition
As "The Devil Wears Prada" returns with its long-awaited sequel, its leading stars are already being asked about a possible third installment. Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt have a clear answer, and it all comes down to one crucial factor.
Two decades after the original "The Devil Wears Prada" debuted, the cast has reunited for a sequel that revisits the fashion world and its unforgettable characters. Naturally, attention has already turned to whether the story could continue beyond this new chapter.

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt addressed the possibility during a joint interview, making it clear that any future installment would depend on a single essential element.
"The script," Streep, 76, said immediately when asked what would bring her back again. Blunt, 43, echoed that sentiment, adding, "A good script. It's all about the script."
Hathaway, also 43, noted that agreement among the cast would also be key. "And then, everybody has to say yes," she added. Blunt followed up by emphasizing the importance of keeping the original dynamic intact, saying, "It's got to be the core four," referring to the trio alongside Stanley Tucci.
Streep added a lighthearted remark to the discussion, joking, "They have to be alive."
Revisiting Familiar Characters in a Changing Industry
The sequel brings audiences back into the orbit of Miranda Priestly, played by Streep, who remains the commanding editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. Hathaway’s Andy Sachs has returned as well, now serving as the publication’s features editor.
The story sees the two navigating a shifting media landscape while attempting to secure advertising support from Emily Charlton, Blunt’s character, who has moved on to run Dior’s U.S. operations.
The storyline reflects real-world challenges facing the publishing industry, including declining print circulation and increasing reliance on digital platforms.
Reflecting the Current Media Landscape
Streep has indicated that relevance plays a major role in deciding whether to revisit the franchise again. Speaking in another interview, she explained that any future sequel would need to resonate with contemporary issues.
"Everything has to have its own necessity for being – even the frothiest sort of fun movie," she said, noting the importance of connecting the story to present-day realities.
Stanley Tucci, who reprises his role as Nigel Kipling, also pointed to the film’s timely themes. He said the story addresses "the loss of control that journalists have because of social media and AI."
Rather than attempting to recreate the tone or structure of the 2006 original, the sequel focuses on how the industry and its characters have evolved over time.
A Story That Moves Forward
Hathaway has described the sequel as an exploration of how individuals adapt to the world they want to be part of. She suggested that the film carries a broader message about the role audiences play in shaping the future of journalism.
"I hope people realise the fate of journalism really rests on them and if you believe in it, you believe it's important – I personally do," she said.
The original film remains a staple of popular culture, frequently quoted and recently adapted into a West End musical. That lasting impact has set high expectations for the sequel and any potential continuation.
While the idea of a third "The Devil Wears Prada" film is already generating interest, the cast has made it clear that nothing is guaranteed. For Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt, the decision ultimately comes down to whether the story feels meaningful and relevant.
If the right script comes along and the original cast aligns once more, the door remains open. Until then, the focus stays on the current sequel and its reflection of an industry that continues to evolve.
